Spring Thru-Hiker Season Preview

| Jeff Davis Hostel
Hiker with backpack on mountain trail

Spring is almost here, and that means one thing on the Appalachian Trail: NOBO season. If you’re heading northbound and planning to pass through southwest Virginia, here’s everything you need to know about stopping at Jeff Davis Hostel near Mile 496.5.

When to Expect the Bubble

Most NOBOs hit our stretch of trail between late April and mid-June. The early birds show up in April with their brand-new gear and unstoppable energy. By May, the bubble is in full swing. We love every single one of you, no matter how bad your trail name is.

What We Offer Thru-Hikers

  • Bunks: Four spots in the bunkhouse. First come, first served. Includes a real mattress — remember those?
  • Shuttles: We run shuttles to Elk Garden, Massey Gap, Dickey Gap, and other trailheads. Call ahead to schedule.
  • Gear Rentals: Blew out your tent poles? Stove died? We have rental gear to keep you moving.
  • Resupply: We’re near Highway 58 with access to resupply options. Ask us about the best spots.
  • Creek Access: Cabin Creek is 100 yards from the hostel. Soak your feet, catch a trout, or just stare at the water.

Trail Intel

The AT near Whitetop crosses some of the highest terrain in Virginia. Mt. Rogers (5,729 ft) and Whitetop Mountain (5,520 ft) are both nearby. Weather can change fast up here — pack layers even in May.

Key shelters in our area:

  • Thomas Knob Shelter
  • Trimpi Shelter
  • Wise Shelter
  • Old Orchard Shelter
  • Lost Mountain Shelter

Pro Tips

  1. Call ahead for shuttles — we can pick you up or drop you off at most nearby trailheads
  2. Charge your devices — we have Starlink WiFi and outlets in the bunkhouse
  3. Meet the animals — the goats are friendly, the dogs are friendlier, and the chickens will judge you silently
  4. Golden hour at Grayson Highlands — if you can time your hike to catch sunset with the wild ponies, you won’t regret it

See you on the trail. Keep hiking north.
