After Hurricane Helene swept through the region, the Jeff Davis Hostel community has been hard at work getting things back in shape. We want to share where things stand and what hikers can expect when they visit.
What’s Open
The bunkhouse is fully operational with all four bunks ready for weary hikers. Our RV spots are back online with 50-amp electric and gravity-fed spring water. The Party Deck on the creek bank survived the storm like a champ — the grill is fired up and ready for cookouts.
Cabin Creek is running clear again after some initial debris issues. The Rainbow, Brown, and Native trout are back to their usual spots. Bring your rod.
Trail Conditions
The Appalachian Trail near our section has been cleared by volunteer crews and the ATC. The stretch between Elk Garden and Massey Gap is in great shape. A few reroutes are in place near Thomas Knob Shelter — follow the white blazes and you won’t have any trouble.
Grayson Highlands State Park reopened in December. The wild ponies are doing well and have been spotted frequently near the Massie Gap parking area.
How the Community Came Together
We’ve been blown away by the support from the hiking community. Trail angels, section hikers, and locals all pitched in to clear blowdowns, rebuild trail structures, and help us get the hostel ready. If you helped out — thank you. Seriously.
Looking Ahead
We’re opening early this year to get our systems dialed in before the spring NOBO bubble hits. If you’re planning a winter section hike or just need a warm place to crash on the AT, we’ve got you covered. The Starlink is humming, the coffee maker is full, and the goats are ready for visitors.
Come see us at Mile 496.5. We’ll leave the light on.
