Grayson Highlands Trail Conditions

| Jeff Davis Hostel
Hikers on scenic mountain trail

Here’s your weekly update on trail conditions in the Grayson Highlands area. Whether you’re thru-hiking the AT, doing a section hike, or planning a day trip, this is what you need to know right now.

Current Conditions

Temperature: Highs in the low 40s at the hostel (2,900 ft), dropping to the mid-20s at Whitetop Summit (5,520 ft). Wind chill can make it feel much colder on the exposed balds.

Trail Surface: Mostly dry with some icy patches on north-facing slopes above 4,500 ft. Traction devices recommended for the stretch between Elk Garden and Mt. Rogers summit. The Rhododendron Trail is in excellent shape.

Water Sources: Spring water flowing well at most reliable sources. Cabin Creek at the hostel is running clear.

Wild Pony Report

The Grayson Highlands ponies have been spotted frequently this week near Massie Gap and along the Appalachian Trail between the park boundary and Thomas Knob. A few foals from last spring are growing fast. Remember: the ponies are wild — enjoy them from a distance and never feed them.

Grayson Highlands Loop (8.6 miles)

Start at Massie Gap, take the AT south to the Thomas Knob area, loop back via the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. Great pony viewing opportunities. Allow 5-6 hours.

Mt. Rogers Summit (via Elk Garden)

5.4 miles one way from Elk Garden trailhead. The summit is forested with no views, but the journey through the spruce-fir forest is worth it. This is the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 ft.

Whitetop to Elk Garden

A classic point-to-point section on the AT. About 5 miles with stunning views of the surrounding highlands. We can shuttle you to either end.

Day Hiker Tips

  • Start early — trailhead parking at Massie Gap fills up fast on weekends
  • Layer up — it can be 15-20 degrees colder on the ridgeline than at the hostel
  • Bring trekking poles — the rocky terrain near the balds is ankle-twisting country
  • Check sunset time — use our Golden Hour Calculator to plan your return
  • Stop by after your hike — the Party Deck grill is always ready, and Cabin Creek is perfect for cooling off
